Check a weapon at the distance you expect to fight
A result at close range may tell you little about a distant target. In Ballistics, choose the weapon and ammunition, set the target and change the distance. Read damage and shots to kill for that scenario; the calculation does not account for every shot in a moving fight.
Use damage curves to inspect more of the range, or weapon comparison to weigh alternatives together.
